Editorial Policy

This page explains how calculators and guides on this site are researched, written, reviewed, and corrected.

Sourcing standard

  • Legal, regulatory, and formula-history claims are meant to cite a primary source next to the claim — state insurance-department materials, statutes and regulations, court opinions or settlement orders, official policy-form language, or government consumer guides.
  • Secondary sources (industry commentary, news coverage) may be used to aid discovery of a topic, but are not used as the sole support for a consequential legal or financial claim.
  • A claim is not published merely because other websites repeat it. If a commonly repeated statement cannot be traced to a verifiable primary source, it is described as commonly stated rather than presented as settled fact.
  • Every source actually cited on the site is tracked in the public source register.

Content creation

  • Guides are written to answer one clear question, with a plain-language summary near the top, a worked example, an explanation of what varies by state, and an honest statement of what the guide cannot tell the reader.
  • Guides are not mass-generated. Each is written and reviewed individually; near-duplicate pages built only to target keyword variants are not published.
  • Calculators are built as versioned, tested code. Formula constants, thresholds, and bands are documented with an effective date and a reviewed date, shown on the methodology page and inside each tool.

What is never published

  • No fabricated reviews, testimonials, awards, or statistics.
  • No invented professional credentials, licenses, headshots, or biographical claims that have not been verified.
  • No claim that the site determines what a reader is legally owed, guarantees an outcome, or replaces a licensed attorney, adjuster, or appraiser.
  • No structured data (schema.org markup) asserting facts — such as reviews, ratings, or professional credentials — that are not fully supported by the visible page content.

Corrections

Factual errors are corrected as soon as they are identified and verified, and logged on the corrections page. See that page to report an error.
