This is the value lost purely from having "accident" show up on a vehicle-history report — even with a flawless, factory-spec repair. Buyers still discount for it, because a history-report accident is a permanent, visible fact about the car regardless of repair quality. This is the kind of DV the 17c-style baseline is built to approximate.
Repair-related diminished value
This is additional value lost specifically because of how the repair was carried out — for example:
- Aftermarket parts used instead of OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts.
- Frame or structural work that wasn't restored to factory specifications.
- Paint that doesn't match, or visible panel-gap/alignment issues.
- A repair that leaves mechanical or safety-system issues unresolved.
Repair-related DV requires different evidence than inherent DV — typically an inspection or a body-shop/appraiser's documentation of specifically what fell short of factory standard, rather than just a market-comparison of clean vs. accident-history vehicles.
Worked example. Two cars with the same accident history and repair cost: one repaired entirely with OEM parts and returned to factory panel gaps; one repaired with aftermarket body panels and a visible paint mismatch. Both may show similar inherent DV in a market comparison — but the second car likely carries additional repair-related DV that a market comparison alone won't necessarily isolate, since it depends on inspection findings specific to that repair.
Why this site's calculator focuses on inherent DV
The Diminished Value Baseline calculator's 17c-style output and market-evidence worksheet are both structured around inherent DV — value lost from the accident history itself. It does not attempt to inspect or quantify repair quality, since that requires a physical inspection this tool cannot perform. If you believe your specific repair fell short of factory standard, that's a separate, inspection-based claim best supported by a qualified appraiser's documentation.
