Your Tax & Fee Estimate
Methodology version 1.0 — last reviewed 2026-08-14.
Texas Comptroller, Motor Vehicle Tax Guide — Insurance Settlement Transfers — same primary state-government source cited in the companion guide, as one real example of how a state handles this.
This tool intentionally does not include a built-in state tax-rate table — see the companion guide for why. Enter your own known or looked-up rate.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I have to enter my own tax rate instead of picking my state?
Because sales tax rates vary by state and often by county or city within a state, and they change over time. A built-in state-by-state table would go stale and could be confidently wrong for your specific purchase. Look up your combined state + local rate (your dealership's paperwork or your state Department of Revenue will have it) and enter it directly — the arithmetic from there is exact.
Does this tool tell me whether my insurer owes me this tax back?
No. Whether tax reimbursement is available, and how to request it, depends on your state and your insurer's process — see Sales Tax, Title, and Fees on a Total-Loss Settlement for the general pattern. This tool only estimates the dollar amount, not your entitlement to it.
What counts as a title/registration fee here?
Any flat state or county fee for titling and registering the replacement vehicle, separate from sales tax. It's optional — leave it blank if you only want the tax estimate.
Is anything I type sent to a server?
