Total-Loss Threshold Checker

Pick your state, enter the repair estimate and ACV from your claim, and this tool checks your numbers against your state's own total-loss rule — a simple percentage threshold, or the Total Loss Formula — using the exact same state-by-state table published in the companion guide.

What this checks, and what it doesn't. This shows whether your numbers meet your state's default legal minimum test for a total loss — it does not mean your insurer is required to total below that point (many total voluntarily), and it isn't a substitute for confirming the current rule with your state insurance department. See State Total-Loss Threshold Laws Explained for the full table and how each method works.

Check Your State's Threshold

Where the claim is being handled.

U.S. dollars, from the insurer's valuation. Example: 10000.

U.S. dollars. Example: 7500.

Optional. Only used if your state uses the Total Loss Formula.

Educational tool, not legal advice. This calculator checks your numbers against a published state-threshold table; it does not determine your state's current legal rule with certainty, or tell you what your insurer must do. See our full disclaimer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this tool tell me whether my insurer must total my car?

No. It tells you whether your numbers meet your state's default legal minimum test for a total loss. Insurers can voluntarily total a vehicle below that point, and the test itself depends on your state's exact percentage or Total Loss Formula rule, which can change — always confirm the current rule with your state insurance department.

What's the difference between the percentage rule and the Total Loss Formula (TLF)?

A percentage-threshold state compares repair cost directly to actual cash value (ACV). A TLF state adds estimated salvage value to the repair cost first, then compares that total to ACV — so the same repair estimate can produce a different result depending on which method your state uses. See State Total-Loss Threshold Laws Explained for the full breakdown.

I'm in a TLF state — where do I get an estimated salvage value?

You can leave it blank to see your repair-to-ACV percentage for reference, or use the Salvage / Owner-Retained Value calculator to work out a supportable salvage estimate from comparable salvage-title sale prices before entering it here.

Where does the state threshold table come from?

The same source cited in the companion guide: a periodically updated Policygenius compilation, cross-checked against a real state regulator's own published methodology (New Hampshire) as one example. It's a secondary compilation, not a direct statute citation — treat it as a starting point.
